Ibo (Igbo), Nigeria
Spirit mask/crest. Seven to eight million Ibo extend across the main region of eastern Nigeria. They comprise a large number of sub-tribes, they have resisted centralization and have no large towns. Drawing influence from many of the surrounding tribes, carvings amongst the Ibo show a great diversity of style and are often difficult to ascribe to any one sub-tribe.  The mask represents a spirit of the dead. White was the symbolic color of the dead. To all appearance this mask did not participate in dances, but was kept in the religious house. The spirit mask is in a very good condition.

Basikasingo figure, East Congo (previously Zaire).
This sculptural style was for an extended period identified as Bembe or Boyo, however recent research has attributed such figures to the Basikasingo, a Pre-Bembe people. The Basikasingo live near Lake Tanganyika and the Lualaba River.
Thes carved figures known as "mizi" are kept on family shrines by the Basikasingo to depict ancestors.
The well-aged figure with the elongated and abstract face is defined by refined facial features and zig-zag carving along the edges of the face. This extraordinary play of sculptural form is a tribute to the Basikasingo sculptor who created a form that is representative of their beliefs and aesthetics.
